When you think of the Greek Islands you think of Santorini, Mykonos, Naxos, maybe even Lesbos. When we first looked at our cruise itinerary and I saw Corfu I thought; Where’s that? After going online I find out that it’s not even in the Aegean, it’s actually in the Ionian Sea. The average American has probably never even heard of it. It’s actually closer to Albania than Greece. After being ruled by the Venetians, French, British and Greeks the people seem to have a real pride in being from Corfu. I made the mistake on trying to Order a Greek beer (Mythos). I quickly told by the waiter that I should a local Corfu draft beer, it was much better. He was right. Lesson learned.
We stuck to our routine and got going early. Grabbed a cab and headed for the old town.

Our waiter asked us how we liked Corfu. Kim said she really liked it but we were only in port for the day on a cruise. He then proceeded to tell us that we needed to come back for a at least a week. He then wrote us up a list of hotels we should stay at when we came back. This guys should be Corfu’s minister of tourism!
After hiking the old town we returned to the ship and found our favorite deck chairs. As we sat there watching boats coming and going I became quite impressed with the ferry captains. These guys know their stuff! With shipping the primary way to get on or off the island, ferry’s were the transportation method of choice.

Corfu feels like one of those places you could go back to and just roam around the island for a week. And we’ve already got lodging recommendations!
