This was the first big church in Italy that we went inside. We thought this was HUGE. Until we went into St.Peter’s in Rome….. But that’s another blog post.
The architecture and decor is quite eclectic since many of the columns and statues were plundered from other cities and brought back to Venice. The ultimate show of power and recycling. All of the pictures on the wall are actually mosaics. Ancient churches used candles for lighting and the build up of soot, over the centuries, would ruin normal oil paintings.
The Basilica was meant to give legitimacy to Venice and demonstrate it’s power in 1084. Even in 2017 it’s pretty darn impressive!
